I've got a Taylor 555 jumbo mahogany 12-string that mostly sits because, frankly, I don't much care for the sound of the strings, which, by law, have to be far lighter than one would use on a 6-string. If I put on heavier strings I have to tune down so that the tension is not excessive (don't want to strain the neck). Then I'm right back where I started, only pitched lower.
My question is this--if I want to string it as a 6-string, and the nut/bridge slots are adequate, shouldn't I be able to put a set of .012's or even .013's without worrying about any stress issues? I would appreciate any theoretical or experiential input on this. many thanks! |

Eldorado; Yeah, you shouldn't have any trouble other than possible vibrational rattle from the empty tuners (I did this once on an old Yari). Rgds, Joe |

Eldorado,
I would agree with Joe's comments regarding your specific question. |

Thanks guys, I wanted to make sure I wasn't overlooking something important. Lately every project I undertake turns into Apollo 13.
I hadn't thought about rattling tuners, Joe, thanks for that. I suppose if that happens I can resort to duct tape or some other cheap fix. |
